Then it’s time for the hands-on experience with staining, painting, assembling, and decorating this distinctive instrument. In addition to the practical aspects of crafting, students will explore the cultural significance and history of the thunder gourd within Native American traditions. Discussions will cover its ceremonial use, symbolism, and role in indigenous music, providing valuable context and appreciation for the instrument’s heritage. By the end of the workshop, each participant will have crafted their own unique thunder gourd, imbued with personal flair and cultural resonance. A variety of gourds will be available to select from. Gourds have been cleaned, sanded, cut, sealed inside, and pre-drilled. All supplies needed to create your thunder gourd will be provided. Students are welcome to bring their own embellishments such as stones, beads, gems, etc., if desired. Participants are encouraged to bring an apron or wear clothing suitable for staining/painting. Note: Gourds vary in size, shape, texture, color, and are subject to participant’s creativity.
